The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, engaged in multi-disciplinary, evidence-informed policy research. Our researchers are contributing to the body of evidence about the critical issues in population health and well-being impeding Africa’s development in order to provide strong direction and recommendations to policy- and decision-makers at all levels.

Background and Objectives
APHRC is seeking a dynamic, intuitive and experienced writer/editor to develop flair and confidence among a seasoned group of research scientists and communications professionals. The ultimate goal of this coaching experience will be sharper writers with sharper pens, all of whom will be able to transform the technical into the accessible.

The right candidate will be able to provide both tools and knowledge to help participants develop a reliable writing habit that adheres to house style without compromising editorial voice. Editorial support will encompass developmental, substantive and copy editing, and incorporate techniques for participants to improve not only their own written work but to provide judicious editorial oversight to colleagues at all levels.

Scope of Work
The envisioned duration of this consultancy is six months. Each month would feature a half-day workshop for as many as 20 participants that provides tools to effectively engage the writing process and support their continued editorial development.

Course modules will include practical exercises as well as theoretical pedagogy on the mechanics and art of writing and editing technically sound but engaging content for non-academic publications. Focus areas for the course will include:
  • Structural elements of the non-academic essay and the necessary tools to construct a solid article
  • Structural elements and framing for a stand-alone executive summary, and how it can double as a policy-oriented brief
  • The art of a technical blog: beyond an academic paper
  • How to be a better editor of your own content – and someone else’s
  • How to be more effective in developing narratives to support policy engagement and strategic communications, and resource mobilization
  • Packaging recommendations and results for decision-making
The workshops will be complemented by individual, biweekly, hour-long sessions for selected staff to work through specific pieces of writing. Each participant will have two sessions a month, with the goal of producing publishable and highly readable content for cross-publication and wider dissemination.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and compelling prose and utilize a variety of communications channels
  • Demonstrated ability to provide editorial guidance in developmental and substantive editing beyond line edits
  • Demonstrated writing coaching/training ability, including previous curricula or modules developed for technical or academic writing
  • Proven writing and editing skills
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with charisma and patience
  • Demonstrated ability to provide feedback that is targeted, responsive and relatable while also being constructive
  • Familiarity with the application of house style to editorial content
How to Apply
Interested candidates should send a cover letter and CV to jobs@aphrc.org by October 27, 2017. Your application should include a high-level framing of the kind of training you intend to provide, at least three samples of your own written work, and samples of editing support provided to other writers (tracked changes/marked up editorial content). Candidates must hold a valid Kenyan work permit.

Treat any job employment advert that requires you to send any money for "processing" as a scam. Do not apply or agree to send any money to any employer for any job application.
