Radiation Oncology is part of a comprehensive oncology program at AKUHN that includes medical, pediatric, surgical, and hematological oncology.  The program is supported by all the specialties in medicine and surgery including breast and head and neck surgical oncology.  Neurosurgery has been enhanced by the introduction of state of the art neuro-navigation.  Oncology is further supported by palliative care and pain management specialists, rehabilitation, and specialists in nursing oncology.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chair of Medicine, the incumbent for the position above will be involved in the development of highly skilled and competent teams in the delivery of quality services to patients and their families as well as medical research and clinical education.  Through professional leadership, s/he will develop and implement work plans for services and growth in both quality and quantity in areas of specialization.  As part of faculty, s/he will teach Medicine residents and carry out research in defined areas of professional interest and knowledge.

Requirements
Applicants must have a Masters of Medicine and a fellowship in the Radiation Oncology speciality. The qualification should also meet the registration criteria with Kenya Medical Practitioners’ & Dentists Board as a specialist. Candidates should have independent clinical experience as radiation oncologist of at least 2 years post exit qualification. Candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team. Applicants with scholarly contributions to research, teaching and publications shall be preferred.

Job Purpose
: The main purpose of the job is to manage the collaborative studies between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)-Wellcome Trust Programme and Stanley Centre at the Broad Institute, Boston, USA. The data and sample collection will involve several hospitals and schools on the Kenyan coast. The Assistant Research Officer will work in consultation with the PIs for NeuroDEV to ensure that all logistics are performed in good time, to supervise data and sample collection, and to participate in communications and engagement strategy.

  • Overseeing project operational costs across the participating hospitals or sites.
  • Monitoring of the logistics for running the studies.
Job Dimensions:
The job will involve coordination of data and sample collection across the participating hospitals, management of both internal and external communications with our collaborators, ensuring availability of logistics e.g. use of fully translated assessment tools (Kiswahili) and genotyping kits, identifying and engaging key stakeholders particularly heads of participating hospitals, and providing sites with mentorship and guidance in communication.

The post is both mentally and technically demanding, involving a high level of understanding of the nature of neurodevelopmental disorders, working with families of vulnerable children and coordinating with collaborators in different countries.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as the liaison in communications between the principal investigators and international collaborators or participating sites/hospitals
  • Preparation of logistics for the studies including receiving and safe storage of genotyping kits, and coordination of training of members of staff involved in NeuroDEV.
  • Ensure appropriate collection, storage and transport of genetic samples to the USA.
  • Help with supervision and coordination of members of staff in the NeuroDEV particularly the field workers
  • Arranging for site visits or on-site trainings by our collaborators as well as team building activities of members of staff
  • Monitoring data collection progress and making recommendations to the Principal Investigators.
  • Identify stakeholders and determine strategic engagement strategies with the communities and county and hospital administrators.
  • Provide professional support in the preparation of the NeuroDEV communication including reviewing, editing and providing rigorous feedback on drafts of papers and reports to ensure high standards.

Qualifications:
  • A Degree from an accredited institution in the field of human development and biology
  • At least 1 year of experience in a relevant post or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of genetics and genomics

  • Understanding and exposure to Good Laboratory Practice

Job Dimensions
The KEMRI clinic in Mtwapa has followed mostly male and female sex workers, and reported on HIV-1/STI acquisition risks in key publications. Currently the clinic provides ART and PrEP care to 300-400 participants. New protocols will include screening for acute HIV infection, partner notification services, and an HIV-vaccine trial to start in 2019.

Routine screening of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infection is done through on-site X-pert testing, with subsequent isolation of N. Gonorrheoae at the KWTRP. Whole genome sequencing of 103 NG isolates has been completed in collaboration with Prof. Chris Tang at Oxford University.

Under supervision of the PIs, Drs. Susan Graham and Eduard Sanders, the candidate will strengthen STI diagnosis and care in Mtwapa, conduct longitudinal analysis of CT/NG infection among different risk groups at first instance, and will be encouraged to develop his/her own protocol. Areas of interest for protocol development include sexual and reproductive health, mental health, substance abuse, and others.

Qualifications
  • A PhD Holder.

  • Demonstrable STI research experience through first and second author papers.
