Summary:
JOB PURPOSE:The IAVI-HIV clinical research laboratory supports ongoing HIV-1 vaccine feasibility studies in Mtwapa, including observational cohort studies of risk factors for HIV-1/STI acquisition, an acute HIV-1 infection study (Tambua Mapema Trial supported by the NIH), and will prepare for a Phase II HIV-1 vaccine study supported by Oxford (GREAT trial) in 2018 Research of both T-cell and B-cell immunology and viral diversity in volunteers with acute HIV infection will be done in collaboration with investigators within the research group. The post holder will manage the IAVI-HIV research laboratory

JOB DIMENSIONS
The position holder will be based in the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Laboratories and will also support the KEMRI clinic lab in Mtwapa

Responsibilities
  • Lead and direct HIV/AIDS research laboratory activities, including programmatic work, prepare for HIV-1 phase II vaccine study, ensure enrolment in quality assurance programmes of various trials.
  • Contribute actively to HIV/AIDS, and STI epidemiology research protocols, with special emphasis on the laboratory analytical plan, budgeting and ensuring purchasing of reagents.
  • Provide quality HIV diagnotstic, serology, X-pert quality and quantity assays and clinical laboratory services for epidemiology research
  • Involved in sample processing, storage, shipment and completion of necessary documentation according to GCLP standards
  • Support research activities by carrying out experiments such as ELISPOT assays
  • Ensure adherence to KEMRI-WT bio-safety standards and implementation of quality control processes
Qualifications
  • A degree in Biomedical Science or its equivalent
  • At least 7 years experience in a medical laboratory, preferably HIV experience, with 5 years in a supervisory position
  • Knowledge of current laboratory facilities and best practices in lab operations, methods, equipment, materials and ability to perform standardized biological, chemical and microbiological examinations independently
  • Advanced understanding of GCLPs, regulatory/accreditation agency requirements
  • Excellent computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Applications

Summary:
JOB PURPOSE:To provide technical support to research teams in the set up of laboratory experiments, analysis of samples/data and recording of applied processes and procedures in order to meet clinical research objectives. Experiments to be performed include, enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and neutralizing and non-neutralizing assays to determine antibody function.

JOB DIMENSIONS:

To co-ordinate and manage laboratory activities for the project, order reagents and stationary, develop and maintain standard operating procedures. Manage and archive samples in the lab, perform the laboratory assays and present data for analysis.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments, interpret and document results through the use of routine and basic laboratory procedures involving manual techniques or use of laboratory instruments.
  • Standardise, calibrate and carry out preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting on laboratory equipment and instrument.
  • Receive samples and ensure that relevant support documentation is provided and process in line with relevant QC guidelines; document sample and process information.
  • Liaise with Nurses, clinicians, health care workers and public in order to ensure that relevant samples are taken/ provided, resolve discrepancies and to communicate results in line with laid down procedures.
  • Participate in various QAQC, EQA, IQC and regulatory agency activities within the assigned section, including developing and documenting QC monitors.
  • Provide technical advice to researchers in the design of experiments.
Qualifications
  • A Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board
  • Knowledge and understanding of GCLPs and regulatory/ accreditation agency requirements
  • Knowledge of laboratory Health and Safety practices
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications
  • Experience in peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) separation and cell culture techniques is an added advantage.
