Our researchers are contributing to the body of evidence about the critical issues in population health and well-being impeding Africa’s development in order to provide strong direction and recommendations to policy- and decision-makers at all levels.

Background and Objectives
APHRC is seeking a dynamic, intuitive and experienced writer/editor to develop flair and confidence among a seasoned group of research scientists and communications professionals. The ultimate goal of this coaching experience will be sharper writers with sharper pens, all of whom will be able to transform the technical into the accessible.

The right candidate will be able to provide both tools and knowledge to help participants develop a reliable writing habit that adheres to house style without compromising editorial voice. The envisioned duration of this consultancy is six months. Each month would feature a half-day workshop for as many as 20 participants that provides tools to effectively engage the writing process and support their continued editorial development.

Course modules will include practical exercises as well as theoretical pedagogy on the mechanics and art of writing and editing technically sound but engaging content for non-academic publications. Focus areas for the course will include:
  • Structural elements of the non-academic essay and the necessary tools to construct a solid article
  • Structural elements and framing for a stand-alone executive summary, and how it can double as a policy-oriented brief
  • The art of a technical blog: beyond an academic paper
  • How to be a better editor of your own content – and someone else’s
  • How to be more effective in developing narratives to support policy engagement and strategic communications, and resource mobilization
  • Packaging recommendations and results for decision-making
The workshops will be complemented by individual, biweekly, hour-long sessions for selected staff to work through specific pieces of writing.
